Short answer
Trees and conditions in Butler Beach
Working in tight quarters
On a typical Butler Beach lot, the tree we are removing has a house on one side, a fence on the other, a shed behind it, and a power drop overhead. That is normal for us, and it is the reason we quote what we quote — a tree that would take two hours in an open field takes most of a day when every piece has to come down on a rope.
We stage equipment on the street where we can, protect driveways and pavers, and keep the work area small and controlled. Neighbors on both sides usually get a heads-up before we start, because on lots this size we are working within a few feet of their property.
Palms, oaks, and salt-side species
The tree mix here is coastal: sabal palms in nearly every yard, some Washingtonia, live oaks that have been shaped by decades of ocean wind, and cedar and wax myrtle filling in the gaps. Most of the calls we get are palm maintenance — dead fronds, seed pods, and fronds rubbing the roof — plus periodic oak deadwooding.
A recurring problem in the older sections is palms planted far too close to foundations and drives in the 1970s and 80s. Sabal palm roots do not lift slabs the way an oak will, but a 40-foot palm two feet from a bedroom wall is a storm liability, and those removals come up regularly.
Storm exposure and quick response
Butler Beach sits directly on the barrier island with limited buffering, so it takes wind early in any east-side system. It is also close enough to our shop that we can usually get here quickly once roads are clear.
The best thing homeowners here can do is spring maintenance — palms cleaned, overhanging limbs reduced, and anything dead taken out before June. It is a small annual expense that prevents most of what we would otherwise be cleaning up in September.

Permits in Butler Beach
Who actually governs tree removal at your address
Permitting authority
Unincorporated St. Johns County
County code governs here. On lots this size the practical constraint is usually access and neighbor proximity rather than permitting — most of what we do is climbed and lowered rather than dropped.
We check your exact parcel before quoting, document the tree’s condition with photographs, and file the application as part of the job — so you never chase county paperwork on your own time.
