A lot of what we do out here is reclamation. Land left alone for a decade fills in with Chinese tallow, Brazilian pepper, camphor, greenbrier, and volunteer laurel oaks growing so close together that none of them will ever amount to anything.

Selective clearing changes that completely. Take out the invasives and the crowded volunteers, keep the mature live oaks, magnolias, and healthy pines, and a tangled parcel turns into something that looks like a park. The critical part is treating cut stumps on the invasive species — cut a Chinese tallow without treatment and you get five stems where there was one.

For pasture reclamation and fence lines we chip and disperse on site rather than hauling, which keeps the cost down substantially on larger acreage.

Properties running down to the St. Johns River have soil conditions that swing from dry sand up top to saturated muck near the water. Cypress and water oak thrive down there; pines do not, and pines standing in wet ground are unreliable in a storm.

Equipment access is the other consideration. Soft ground and heavy machines do not mix, and rutting a pasture is a repair job nobody budgeted for. We work off mats where necessary and schedule wet-area work for the dry season when we can.

Switzerland has genuinely large oaks — the kind with 60-foot spreads and limbs thicker than most trees. When one of those needs work, it is a real operation involving climbing, rigging, and sometimes a crane.

When one of them needs to come out — and occasionally they do, after decay or a major failure — it is worth getting a second opinion first. We have talked more than one owner out of removing a tree that just needed weight reduction and a cable, and those trees are still standing.
