When Fleming Island’s communities were built, developers kept a lot of the original slash pine. Twenty-five years on, those trees are tall, their root zones have been cut by driveways and utilities, and they no longer have the stand around them that used to break the wind.

They are also chronically overwatered. Lawn irrigation calibrated for St. Augustine grass keeps pine root zones wetter than pines like, and chronic saturation plus root loss is a recipe for slow decline and eventual failure.

Not all of them are hazards. But a pine with a thinning crown, a previously broken top, or beetle activity on the trunk is worth a proper look before hurricane season rather than after.
